So you have a Hernia - What Next?

Getting a Referral from your Doctor

hernia referral

Yes you will need to see your GP and obtain a referral outlining the details of your medical condition and an overview of your health, including any current medications or existing conditions.

This makes our consultation much easier, however your GP may not readily provide such information so a detailed examination may be needed to ensure that all important information about allergies, medications and possible complications can be identified prior to having hernia surgery.

If you have any questions about the type of information we will need from your GP, you can call our offices or use our contact form to ask any questions.

Your First Appointment

The Hernia Repair Centre will usually schedule your first appointment within the first week after your enquiry. If all goes well liasing with you GP, your hernia surgery can be scheduled for the next week, unless the surgery is urgent in which case you will be seen on the same day for potentially immediate surgery.

What happens during the initial consultation?

You will meet with the surgeon and you will discuss your referral and your health concern including information about the hernia's symptoms including any pain and swelling, x-rays, medications and blood test results.

Your general health and fitness may also be assessed to determine your suitability for hernia surgery.

Any affected areas will be examined whilst standing and lying down. For hernias this will include your groin, abdomen and in men the scrotal and testes.

Before referring for surgery, consideration is given carefully to the health of the patient and any concerns addressed with the patient and discussed in depth to ensure both the patient and the surgeon are well informed and comfortable with the hernia operation proceeding.
