A Video on Incisional Hernia Repair

An incisional hernia is a protrusion at or near the area of a previous abdominal surgical incision. The hernia may not be noticeable unless the patient is involved in an activity that increases abdominal pressure, such as coughing or sneezing.

This type of hernia can develop from any prior abdominal operation. The hernia usually occurs from an infection or improperly healed surigal incision.

Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair is safer, more effective method of surgery for this condition. Typically surgical mesh will be placed into the abdomen underneath the abdominal muscles through small incisions to the side of the hernia. In this manner, the weakened tissue of the original hernia is never re-incised to perform the repair thus one can minimise the potential for infections and complications. Since this operation uses smaller incisions, it can make the operation less painful and quicker to recover from.
