What Causes Hernia?

Hernias may occur through congenital defects, and may reflect a family history of hernias, or they may be caused by illness or other weaknesses from events such as pregnancy or obesity and excess weight loss.

However a hernia can be caused by a number of activities including:

  • heavy weight lifting
  • injury to the abdomen
  • hard coughing
  • and less often, incorrect posture and tight clothing.

Straining during a bowel movement or urination as well as chronic lung disease and fluid in the abdominal cavity are also a less common causes of hernias.
